Metabolic Workups
Metabolic workups are one of the services we offer at Rochester Holistic Psychiatry. What is a basic metabolic workup? A metabolic workup is about the big picture. Many chronic illnesses, like fibromyalgia, diabetes, and lupus have things in common, and a metabolic workup is an easy way to make those issues show themselves.
A metabolic workup is a blood test from the hand or arm that is then analyzed for certain data. Metabolism is how the body derives energy from nutrients and how it distributes and uses that energy. Medical professionals order metabolic workups for all kinds of reasons, including:
− As part of a regular checkup.
− Before a procedure to establish a baseline.
− As part of a new patient intake process.
− To see if a medication is working.
− To assist with diagnostics.
− To monitor changes since the introduction of a regimen.
− To monitor the status of an illness or disorder.
What happens during a metabolic workup? The metabolic panel takes data from the levels of certain substances in the blood, including these:
− Glucose, the body’s main source of energy. Blood sugar level is a major indicator of a problem if too low or high.
− Calcium, that helps blood clot and keeps bones tough.
− Blood urea nitrogen, a byproduct that serves as an indicator of kidney health.
− Chloride, an indicator of how well the body is regulating fluid levels.
− Potassium, which has a major role in regulating breathing and muscle function. Elevated levels of potassium can be an indicator of kidney problems.
− Carbon dioxide, high levels of which can indicate possible kidney and/or lung problems.
− Sodium, which is essential for maintaining proper water levels in the body.
− Creatinine, an indicator of kidney function.
We do metabolic workups not only for a holistic look at the patient’s health and a way to investigate problems, but to help come up with a health plan tailored to the patient’s needs. A metabolic workup is a great way to see what other tests should be done to narrow down any issues found. Treatments can be pursued for vitamin deficiencies, hormone problems, allergies, and more.
The brain is just another part of the body, and we feel it’s important to get a holistic look at the patient’s entire constitution. To schedule an appointment or ask questions, contact us on our website or call (585) 442-6960.
