Finding Your LGBTQIA Identity

Figuring out your LGBTQIA identity is a personal journey of self-discovery, and there’s no one- size-fits-all answer. For some, it comes easily. For others, the journey can shift and change over their lives. It involves exploring your gender identity (how you view your own sense of gender) and sexual orientation (who you are attracted to) and understanding the different labels that can help you express yourself authentically.

To help you better understand your developing gender identity, pay attention to how you feel about the gender assigned to you at birth, and what gender you wish people see you as.

Consider if you feel a connection to, or disconnect from, a particular gender. Consider gender expression. How do you want to express your gender through clothing, hair, and other means? What feels comfortable and authentic to you?

Try exploring different gender identities. There are many different identities, including transgender, non-binary, genderfluid, agender, and more. It may be helpful to research these terms to see which ones resonate with you. Try using different pronouns on. Consider what pronouns you feel most comfortable with (e.g. he/him, she/her, they/them, ze/zir).

Don’t feel pressured. It’s okay if you’re still figuring things out or if your feelings change over time. There’s no rush to put a label on yourself. Explore different sexual orientations. Consider terms like lesbian, gay, bisexual, straight, queer, pansexual, and others.

You can find support and resources by connecting with LGBTQIA communities. Seek out local LGBTQ+ organizations, support groups, and online communities where you can find validation and guidance. Talk to trusted individuals. Share your feelings with friends, family members, or therapists who you feel comfortable with. This can help you explore your identity in a safe

space.

Consult with professionals. If you’re struggling to navigate your identity, consider seeking professional help from a therapist or counselor specializing in LGBTQIA issues. Use online resources. Websites like The Trevor Project and Planned Parenthood offer valuable resources and information about gender identity, sexual orientation, and coming out.

There’s no one-size-fits-all way to figure out your identity. Your journey will be unique to you. It’s a process. Figuring out your identity is a continuous process of self-discovery, and it maytake time.

Don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions. It’s okay to question your identity and explore different labels. There’s no shame in that. Always remember that you are valid. No matter what your identity is, you are valid and worthy of love and acceptance.
