Medicine is making great advancements in the field of analyzing psychotropics for their possibilities in treating mental conditions such as depression, schizophrenia, and more. We follow these advancements carefully, as we desire to offer only the best, most current
treatments here.
But what’s in Spravato? Today, we want to take a look into the composition of this new drug, which is having positive results with patients suffering from treatment-resistant depression. Take a look at our other articles on Spravato at this link.
Spravato is the brand name of the drug esketamine, or (S)-ketamine, which is the S(+) enantiomer of ketamine. It is made by a process wherein a catalytic asymmetric hydrogenation reaction is used for enantioselective synthesis. With such chemical manipulations, the esketamine molecule is built from its ketamine origin. The final chemical formula is C13H16CINO.HCI. The molecule contains a hydrochloride salt, a methyl amino group, a cyclohexane ring, and a chlorine-substituted phenyl group.
Since its first synthesis in 1962, esketamine is used for similar purposes as ketamine. Historically and currently, medical uses of ketamine include anesthesia in high-risk patients with issues such
as:
− Bronchospasm
− Incomplete nerve blocks
− Circulatory shock
− Fracture reduction
Ketamine can have serious health consequences if taken incorrectly or abused. Checks have been put in place with composition, dosage, administration, and aftercare to ensure that Spravato is safe and effective for its intended use.
